“I wish every vacation could be just like this one,” my son sighed contentedly, as we dropped our bags in the foyer of our three bedroom vacation rental. Of course, we had spent the entire day driving so it wasn’t the activities that had inspired his praise. As our resident homebody, it was the grand and glorious idea of coming home to a place that felt like home. The space to spread out, a kitchen to cook food, a backyard to host backyard games-these are the things that matter to a traveler who feels out of sorts in the typical confinements of a hotel.
Booking with FlipKey
When it comes to vacation rentals, there are plenty of sites to choose from, each offering slightly different services and experiences. When it came down to it, we chose to use FlipKey because the booking was the most convenient and less confusing. Other sites require a, sometimes lengthy, process of emailing and calling the owner of the property before the booking can be finalized. FlipKey provides a “Book It Now” button for a majority of their properties, allowing me to get an instant rate and pay securely online. One of my frustrations with the home rental process in the past was that I couldn’t not quickly and easily guarantee the reservation. FlipKey’s process takes away the middleman, and allows the home rental process to be much more like booking a hotel online.
Our FlipKey Rental
For our multi-generational trip to the Grand Canyon we knew that we would need some space to spread out. Three bedrooms and a full kitchen were definitely on our list, but this rental caught my eye because it was listed as a family friendly with amenities for small children. One of the worries that I have when renting a home is that it will not be suitable for children, or, worse, my children will not be suitable for the home. It was comforting to know that we would be able to find a home that was childproof and outfitted with dishes, toys, and other accoutrements for children. Upon arrival, my children were quick to find the giant box of Legos, the backyard playhouse/sandbox, and an entire collection of board games. It bears noting that the game collection included the deluxe version of many classic games. You can tell much about a home owner by their board game collection, and the Yahtzee version with the velvet rolling board and gold dice speaks volumes.
The attention to detail and care to provide everything needed for a family continued throughout the home. The kitchen was well stocked, not only with standard cooking gear, but also with condiments, elements for picnicking, and food storage details. Sitting down to eat in the kitchen each night was a welcome relief from the eating out fare that is so typical of the traveling experience. There was a warmth and coziness to the relaxation at the end of each day, even and especially when I was able to toss in a load of laundry. There is something to be said for the blissful luxury of knowing you can wash your dirty clothes at the end of the day.
FlipKey offers a huge variety of rentals in the Grand Canyon area that fit every family size.
~FlipKey provided a complimentary rental to my family during our stay in Flagstaff. They did not require that I express a particular viewpoint and all opinions are my own.~

How does FlipKey compare to AirBnB?
I haven’t used any, but I’ve been thinking that home rentals may be a good alternative to hotels sometimes.

I think Flipkey is more “corporate” and has more of the experience of booking a hotel, whereas AirBnb deals more directly with the owner, so the experience is varied.

I’ll have to try FlipKey for our next trip. I’ve used VRBO several times but find it more painful than not…
