Random Acts of Kindness at Terminal B: Travel Tips Tuesday

How to Be an Airport Hero

Arriving in the waiting area at the end of the terminal, I notice that there are plenty of empty seats, but the majority of the passengers are clustered around a single set of seats in the corner.  Like vultures, a number of people are pacing around, waiting. The lucky ones are hungrily slurping electricity into their dwindling devices from the single power source. The others are hoping to swoop in and take the coveted power outlet before the plane takes off.  It’s a desperate situation, and I have been a waiting power vulture many, many times.

Not anymore.

As I approached the collection of people at the single plug, I pulled a six slot power strip from my carry-on bag.  The desperate powerless waiting with limp power cords in their hands get a glint of excitement in their eyes as I approach the privileged two and ask if I could plug in my power strip.  Of course, one of them is happy to oblige, and each of us take the first two slots in the strip, leaving four more spaces. I welcome the uncharged masses like a one woman airport USO and they gratefully link up their devices. In the process, they thank me profusely and we swap travel stories, joined by our mutual desire for a fully charged battery before a long flight.

That’s how a power strip became my faithful traveling companion, and I got to spend a few brief moments as the airport hero. When I boarded my plane in Zone 4 and took my middle seat for three hour flight, I was right back in my place as an average Joe Schmoe Traveler, but at least I had the memory of my airport terminal glory and my fully charged battery to keep me company.

I could just picture you all huddled on the floor around a pillar in the terminal. 🙂

A power board is now part of the must have things to pack when travelling. We now take so many electronic gadgets: camera, phone, E-tablet and my partner uses a snore machine that has to be plugged in, oh and we like to have a mosquito repellent going through the night as well.

I’ve never understood why more airports are equipped for this…people are waiting for HOURS and it seems like such a no brainer! Great post!

What a great idea! Next time I travel, I’ll have one of those power cords tucked away in my carry-on.
