Confession time: I have been feeling sorry for myself lately. Why? Because I am yearning for a traveling adventure and there is nothing in sight. In an exercise of extreme delayed gratification, we are planning a major cross country trip for the fall of next year, so any vacation budgets for this year are already earmarked. I am told that delayed gratification is the hallmark of a grownup, but this delay is threatening to take a hold and turn into a full blown tantrum. Not very grownup of me, I’m afraid.
Those of you who are die hard travelers understand that I am not just bitten by a travel bug or yearning for a week of vacation. It is as if my soul enters into a state of inert languor between trips. Lately, my wandering urge has begun to gnaw at my insides like a thirst that can’t be quenched, leaving me spiritless. For months, I have been a passive participant in my little corner of the globe, silently ruminating over my current state of staying put.
In truth, there is some enjoyment in wallowing around in your own ennui, but that only last for so long. I’ve noticed that my personal pity party is no longer attractive to me, and it long ago became tiresome to my family.
This morning, I awoke with a plan. Casting off my melancholy and embracing my inner optimist, I am resolved to bloom where I am planted. Take Old City Hall (pictured above) for example. I have driven past this beautiful, historic building dozens of times and even walked by this weekend and took a picture. But I have never taken the time to go inside and explore. That is going to change, as I hope to unearth this, and many other places right in my own backyard. Perhaps as a sojourner in my own home, many adventures are yet waiting for me.

I've never been to Dallas before, and just looking at the picture, I was sure it was taken in Holland!
We're often "stuck" due to my husband's limited corporate vacation time allotment. So we make a special emphasis on what I call "Backyard Adventures," and we end up really enjoying ourselves. Hope you find the same to be true!
Whenever I feel like this, we roam around and see places a short distance away from our home. We're always amazed by what we unearth. Often, we live near VERY cool places!

I was just telling someone today about all the red tulips they're planting in Dallas these days. LOVE IT! And they're mixing them with purple pansies, I believe? Enjoy digging into the parts of town that you haven't yet ventured through. Can't wait to read about it!

I am a "must travel" Momma too …. Oftentimes, we travel to pick up a child we've adopted overseas (smile) but, lately, we've been traveling for educational and mind-broadening reasons alone.
I was in India in January (with 2 of my sons) and right now am in Florida.
I think traveling is SUCH an important aspect of learning to "love learning". It is impossible to travel without learning…
Even if it is mucking around Disney World for the last few weeks!
Last summer, we were in the same $$$ predicament as you (as we were saving for the India trip) so we did local, long weekend excursions that'd we'd never done before.
I have been raised in Indiana and the excursions we embarked on taught me SO much about the place I have lived for 36 years!
It reminded me that one mustn't cross oceans to 'travel'. 🙂
