Liverpool and Chester, Two Family Friendly UK Destinations
written by Charlotte Stamper
The UK is a great place to visit as a family, especially if you plan ahead for great family friendly activities. Two of my favourite cities in the North of England are Chester and Liverpool, both of which are really easy to get to from London and are great stop offs if you are going on to visit the North Wales coast or the Lake District. Over the years I have got to know some of the best places to go with children in these cities so here are my top places to visit in Chester and Liverpool when you are holidaying with the kids in tow.
Liverpool
Although going to a big city like Liverpool doesn’t necessarily scream child friendly, Liverpool is a great place to visit with children. There are loads of really fantastic, free museums that are wonderful for inquisitive kids. The child friendly World Museum, with its interactive displays including ones on ancient history and nature and the Maritime Museum on the docks are a good place to start.
Try getting the kids inspired by telling them about the history of Liverpool, especially about the docks area. The Albert Dock is a really nice place to walk around and talk about how much things have changed in the last hundred years. Visiting the Pier Masters House on the dock is another way to learn about the life of our grandparents and great grandparents as its all set out like a house from during WW2. If you are still hungry for more social history, the Museum of Liverpool, also on the docks is informative yet family friendly enough for children to enjoy.
~Duck Marine Land and Water Tour~
One of the best ways to see Liverpool is by a trip on the unusual Yellow Duckmarine, an authentic World War II landing vehicle. The trip lasts for an hour and takes the riders on a tour of some of the best sights of the city including the Liver Building and China Town and also includes a dramatic splash as the bus turned boat enters the water. Another good way to see the city is with a ride on the big wheel where the views of the city are spectacular.

Chester
Chester, located only about forty five minutes from Liverpool and easily accessed by rail or road is another fabulous city to visit with children. There are plenty of family friendly cafes and restaurants; a personal favourite of mine is the Blue Moon cafe on the river front. The Blue Moon is a 1950’s cafe complete with formica tables and authentic chairs. The walls are jam packed with memorabilia from the era and there is a juke box if you fancy playing a tune. They have a great kids menu and they have a good selection of games to play to keep them entertained too.
After lunch, you could try to burn off some energy with a walk around the city walls. The route is generally family friendly, although if you are walking with a stroller beware are the route does include quite a few steps. Little ones will love the freedom of Grosvenor Park and there is a nice little play area tucked away in the corner near the park’s main entrance. In school holidays there is also a miniature railway that takes a route around the park and a little shop at the station selling Thomas the Tank Engine goodies that kids will love too.
