Traveling has a reputation for being expensive, but it doesn’t have to be! Throw your suitcase in your hotel room and have a good time without spending a dime — here’s how:
1. Visit a Park Parks and playgrounds are some of the best free entertainment you can find in any city. But don’t just head to the first one you see! Many cities have multiple options, depending on what you’re looking for. Want a place to feed ducks? Or maybe a toddler-friendly park? Just check the city’s website for a list of amenities that are offered at each park.
2. Explore a Museum Check out the city’s website for details on any museums that offer free admission. Most museum’s have programs specifically for children. It’s a great opportunity to learn some local history and is the perfect chance to do some road-schooling.
3. Splash! If it’s summer, chances are that the city has a splash pad or two that is open to the public. The chance to stand under a bucket of water just as it tips over and pours all over your head seems to be magical to children — so spend the day doing something that they’re sure to love. Visit the city’s parks and recreation website for more info.
4. Check Out the Library The library isn’t just a place to check out books. They often have free activities for children, teens, and even adults. Can’t make it to a scheduled event? Don’t mark the library off your list just yet! Our local library has toys and even a puppet theater in the children’s area. Go ahead and visit and you just might be surprised.
5. Go for a Nature Hike Get the kids outside and expend some energy by finding a hiking trail and going on a nature hike. Look for signs while you’re at the park, or even better — check out the city’s parks and recreation website for a list of nature trails. Follow the path and have some fun!
6. Search for Historical MarkersHere’s a chance to learn a little local history and have some fun at the same time. My kiddo LOVES searching for historical markers. He knows what they look like and calls out whenever he sees them. Go for a walk downtown and see how many you can find.
7. Take a Trip to the Mall And not just to window shop! Malls are a great place to find indoor play areas. If the mall has a bookstore, LEGO store, or even a Disney store, be sure to drop in for free activities or to play with their train table. So much fun!
8. Go For a Ride Check out the local public transportation — you just might find a free option! Here in Dallas, there’s a free trolley that kids love to ride. Search online to see what the city you’re visiting offers.
9. Explore the Farmer’s Market Farmer’s Markets are popping up everywhere, and for good reason! They’re a great opportunity to peruse local goods and purchase high-quality fruits and vegetables. But you don’t necessarily have to break out your wallet — we like to visit for free entertainment
10. Find a Festival Cities have festivals all the time. Whether it’s to celebrate local art, holidays, or just because, festivals can be a great way to spend the day. They offer lots of activities {many free} and usually have booths catered toward children. Search online to find out if a festival is going on in the city you’re visiting.

I never thought of some of these things…I don’t live in a city either though, a small town more like it. Even then you can always find a couple of free things to do here and there!

Visiting parks and playgrounds is one of my favorite ways to play like a local in a new city. And, it’s a good place for the whole family to unwind, usually at the end of a busy day of touring.

Great tips and I especially like the idea of visiting the library, especially on a rainy day, and discovering new books and toys.
