It’s not much more than a roadside burger joint, but it just happens to be on the finest piece of real estate on the Niagara River. Perched high on the hill above the river, you can look to the west into Canada and watch the sun set in warm ribbons into the cool water. Maybe that’s why locals and travelers alike recommend eating at The Silo in Lewiston, NY.
While you can certainly feed your soul on the sunset, your stomach needs something more substantial. Burgers, hot dogs, and other standard American fare fill the menu, but if you are going to treat your eyes to something special, your tastebuds deserve the same. The signature sandwich, The Haystack, is a roll overstuffed with a perfect trinity of shredded ribeye, mozzarella cheese, and topped with crunchy hash browns. Be prepared to use both hands to shove the juicy meat with just the right amount of potato crunch into your mouth. It turns out, I’m not the only one who looooves the Haystack. Man vs. Food made a stop at The Silo, and The Haystack made it to the big time.
I would suggest you waddle your way down the river to work off the crunchy, cheese and steak combo, but you’ll want to waddle back eventually for another Haystack, this time the sweet variety from the adjoining caboose. In addition to the Brownie Haystack, the caboose serves a staggering variety of ice cream, custard, and Italian ice for the perfect end to a feast for the all the senses at the Silo.
