The Windmills of Zaanse Schans |
From somber morning at the Anne Frank Museum, we made a quick jump to silly, and set our sights on Zaanse Schans Zaanse Schans is considered somewhat kitschy by locals, but gives you a postcard perfect picture of Holland. Here you can eat waffles, sample cheese and chocolates, and watch wooden shoes being made. You can take a relaxing boat ride and tour the inside of a typical home. And there are of course windmills.

We only had a limited amount of time here because we needed to catch a plane late in the day, so we toured fairly quickly. The highlight of the visit was choosing wooden shoes and watching the shoes being made by in the shop. The boys also enjoyed checking out the dikes and canals up close. The idea of a floating city still fascinates them. I personally find it slightly unnerving and found myself happy to be living on solid ground.

Zaanse Schans was a perfect way to say goodbye to Amsterdam, for all too quickly our time came to an end. I would love to visit this little slice of Holland again and explore more.
